Project Overview
Sonderflex, a 2D and 3D game art outsourcing studio, collaborated with Bantam Planet to create a 3D planet model and assist in refining their map for optimal website integration.
The project scope encompassed:
Developing a 3D planet model
Creating a game box 3D mockup
Optimizing the map's adaptability for the website.
Client's Requirements
Bantam Planet sought Sonderflex's expertise to craft a 3D planet model that resembles their logo, including distinct elements such as land, clouds, and a circling snake, aligning with their game's thematic vision. Basically creating a 3D and 2D Asset for Bantam Planet Website Integration
Additionally, the client aimed to enhance the user experience by integrating their map effectively into their website and mobile platforms.
Sonderflex's Approach
3D Planet Model Creation
Sonderflex initiated the project by discussing on the placement of the 2D flat map into a 3D spherical map. Which part should be extended and which part would be added. This is important because we want to be sure to make the process of 3D modelling and converting it into the sphere easier.
We then made a copy of the map in 2D, black and white color, and then “paint” the part that we think is higher in heights with brighter value and lower terrain with darker value. We assumed the altitude of the terrain by matching it at the old map that has been given.
Then we generate the 2D map that has already been developed into 3D with Houdini. It will then match the shape and the depth of the terrain.
The generated map is not enough, it was then meticulously sculped and polished using ZBrush, referencing the original map provided by Bantam Planet. This step laid the foundation for shaping the planet's surface.
Next, the land was transformed into a spherical planet in Blender, and intricate cloud formations were added to enhance realism.
We then do a back and forth on how the colors look on each region.
We also then simplify the whole model as the file needs to be under 10mb and needs to be functional in a website.
After the surface of the planet is done, it’s time to model and place the cities, train tracks, and the trees!
Finally, a serpentine entity was then meticulously modeled to encircle the planet, complementing the 3D logo. Couple of adjustments were made, such as the shape of the head, the size of the scale, and the coloring.
Map Optimization for Website Integration
First, we try and discuss with Ike, the founder and director of Bantam Planet, to understand his goal to incorporate the map seamlessly into their website.
Sonderflex deconstructed the old map elements, such as legends, text, ocean, and land.
Then we add a couple more adjustments to the map such as additional cities, tracks, and land adjustments.
We also reconfigured the ocean looks so that it could be optimal for viewing on diverse devices, ensuring adaptability for both website and mobile interfaces.
Project Timeline and Delivery
Despite the project's complexity, Sonderflex showcased its efficiency by completing all deliverables within two months in total. This turnaround speed showcased the studio's dedication to meeting client deadlines without compromising quality.
Impact and Output
The 3D planet model and the optimized map elements created by Sonderflex significantly enhanced Bantam Planet's digital presence. The immersive 3D model added depth to their website, engaging users with visually captivating elements. Moreover, the map's adaptability across multiple platforms also improved user accessibility and interaction.
